Blood
Bank Technologist Specialist Programs
Certification as a clinical laboratory or medical technologist
is recommended and a BSN degree in clinical laboratory
science, biological science, or physical science is required
for admission to a program in blood bank technology. The
program is for a minimum of 12 months. Following completion
of the program, certification can be gained by passing
an examination given by the Board of Registry of the American
Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). As of 2004, this
post-degree specialty program was not offered in any North
Carolina college or university. To explore programs offered

Cytotechnology
(CT) Programs
Cytotechnology may be included in a four-year undergraduate
BSN program or be undertaken as a post-graduate fifth-year
of training. Following completion of a CT program, certification
can be gained by passing a national examination given

Histology
Technologist (HTL) & Technician (HT) Programs
Histology technology may
be offered as a four-year undergraduate BSN program
or as a post-graduate fifth-year of training. Histology
technicians may complete on-the-job training or a 12-month
community college program. Following completion of a
HTL or HT program, certification can be gained by passing
a national examination given by the Board of Registry
of the ASCP.

Pathology
Programs
Pathologists must complete four years of medical school
after earning the undergraduate degree. Then an additional
four to five years of residency, clinical laboratory,
and pathology specialty training are required to be
eligible to take the American Board of Pathologists
examination.
